The human condition, as reflected by each person, is a big part of the puzzle, of course—a fundamentally mysterious “condition” that preceded Matt’s life, mine, and yours. Take for instance Thomas Penson de Quincey (1785–1859), the English essayist, opium addict and alcoholic who penned the infamous Confessions of an English Opium-Eater in 1821.

Reportedly, de Quincey had many things going for him, a loving family (his father, a prosperous merchant), good looks, intellectual strength, but sought relief from something—physical, mental, or emotional issues that seemed to control him. In 1804 he turned to opium for relief, and continued until his death. His intake increased, as de Quincey tried to maneuver ubiquitous obstacles—dark days of self-recrimination that seemed to haunt him from the start. In Confessions he wrote about the “burden of the Incommunicable,” and the “divine luxuries of opium.”

We are all born into the human condition, a state of being as curious as the universe itself, and here, we see the ultimate connectivity of all life. Changing, yet changeless.
